Sharpest Manmade Thing

Sharpest Manmade Thing

A field ion microscope (FIM) image of a very sharp tungsten needle. The small round features are individual atoms. The lighter colored elongated features are traces captured as atoms moved during the imaging process (approximately 1 second).

Atomic Bonsai Kit

Atomic Bonsai Kit

It's always nice to have some plant life around the house or to freshen up your drab cubicle, but let's face it -- a number of a modern urbanite (or suburbanite, for that matter) lacks a green thumb.

Enter the Atomic Bonsai Kit! A hip, clever, and evergreen alternative to wilting foliage, you simply interlock the cardboard bonsai leaves and branches together -- no scissors or glue (or watering or sunshine!) required. Like its real-life counterpart, the Atomic Bonsai can be pruned into new and unique forms; simply move a few "leaves" from one branch to another, and voilá -- a brand new configuration! Art On The Moon

Art On The Moon
The only piece of art on the moon (depending, we suppose, on one's definition of art) is a 3?-tall aluminum sculpture titled "Fallen Astronaut".

It was created by Belgian artist Paul Van Hoeydonck and installed by Apollo 15 astronaut David Scott, along with a plaque bearing the names of the 14 astronauts and cosmonauts who died in the service of space exploration.........

Tradition vs. Change in 'Lhasa Vegas'

Tradition vs. Change in 'Lhasa Vegas' The golden dharma wheel and fawns atop the Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Lhasa. Xeni Jardin © 2006
A number of refugees, including the Dalai Lama himself, settled in northern India after China invaded Tibet in 1950. Beijing says Tibet is historically part of China, not an independent nation.

For years, Tibet has been a difficult place to get to for most Westerners, because of visa restrictions -- though these rules may soon be eased to facilitate tourism, as per a recent announcement by a communist party leader in Tibet.

Tourists to Lhasa, the capital and ancient heart of Tibetan Buddhism, might find two very different cities.........

Puzzle Fantastica

Puzzle Fantastica
What's all this then?.

P.F. #1 has become born and grown and lived and shown its charity and, to quote Whitman, it will forever "be curious, not judgmental." It has not been solved. Near 200 contributions have been made, and near 10,000 people have gandered.

Where do we go from here? We weren't being coy earlier when we said the puzzle was bigger than us. We'd like to say it was now bigger than Sudoku but, as Kerouac would have it (certainly quoting someone else anyhow), comparisons are odious. We've not offered a clue in these sentences, please understand. We dont' seek to be mysterious for mystery's sake. That is sincere.........

1 hour alphabet

1 hour alphabet
This alphabet was drawn and colored over the course of an hour, just to see if I could do such a thing.

I tried to make the process as quick as possible by skipping the "penciling" phase and using a Photoshop action I've used on other projects for the coloring.

Try it!........
