Recycle your excess belongings with Freecycle
I wish I''d known about the Freecycle Network when I was moving out of my last house. I had truckloads of stuff taken away by a junk removal company, some of it perfectly usable (exercise machines purchased in late night fits of insanity, tables, and other items that charities didn''t want because they were too big for me to drag out to the driveway). The Freecycle Network is a non-profit grass roots movement with over 4,000 local groups and over 4 million members all over the world. The idea behind it is to keep unwanted belongings out of landfills by offering them up to anyone who might want them. Each local group is moderated by volunteers.
When you search your area, you get a list of nearby local groups. Once you decide which group to join, you''re led to that group''s Yahoo!Group page. The other side of it, of course, is that you can acquire stuff that''s being offered up by other members. I found two groups near where I live, and can''t wait to try this out (I''ve got a diningroom set to give away and want to acquire someone''s used bar stool).

Obama Poised Better to Beat McCain
After all Hillary Clinton may not be able to beat McCain in November, so what's the point in electing her as the Democratic Party nominee for November election?
Electing Hillary Clinton in the primary may prove disastrous for the Democratic Party in the November Presidential Election. A new Time magazine poll shows McCain has a good chance of winning the presidential race if Hillary Clinton is the Democratic Nominee for the President. In this situation Hillary Clinton ties with McCain with 46 percent of the votes.
On the other hand if Obama wins the nomination He has a good chance of beating McCain. In this situation Obama would beat McCain 48 percent to 41 percent.
This difference is due to Independent voters among whom Obama is more popular. So should any one of the Democrats be opting for Hillary Clinton well knowing that this could lead to eight more years of the same. It is time to move over personal likings and opt for the person who would beat McCain in the coming November. We can not afford to lose in the November Election. ........

New, practical dimension to holography
University of Arizona optical researchers have broken a technological barrier by making three-dimensional holographic displays that can be erased and rewritten in a matter of minutes.
The holographic displays which are viewed without special eyewear are the first updatable three-dimensional displays with memory ever to be developed, making them ideal tools for medical, industrial and military applications that require "situational awareness".
"This is a new type of device, nothing like the tiny hologram of a dove on your credit card," UA optical sciences professor Nasser Peyghambarian said. "The hologram on your credit card is printed permanently. You cannot erase the image and replace it with an entirely new three-dimensional picture".
"Holography has been around for decades, but holographic displays are really one of the first practical applications of the technique," UA optical scientist Savas Tay said.
Dynamic hologram displays could be made into devices that help surgeons track progress during lengthy and complex brain surgeries, show airline or fighter pilots any hazards within their entire surrounding airspace, or give emergency response teams nearly real-time views of fast-changing flood or traffic problems, for example.
And no one yet knows where the advertising and entertainment industries will go with possible applications, Peyghambarian said. "Imagine that when you walk into the supermarket or department store, you could see a large, dynamic, three-dimensional product display," he said. It would be an attention-grabber.........

Foreign Students Returning to U.S. Colleges
U.S. schools post large gains in enrollment of foreign S&E graduate students.
Enrollment of first-time, full-time foreign graduate students on temporary visas studying science and engineering (S&E) grew by 16 percent in 2006, following a 4 percent increase in 2005. The increases in the past two years reflect a reversal of the declines in enrollments of new foreign S&E graduate students experienced after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.
"The numbers indicate a rebound of first-time, full-time foreign S&E enrollment in U.S. graduate schools, which declined 19 percent between 2001 and 2004 after 9/11," said Project Officer Julia Oliver, of the National Science Foundation (NSF), which cosponsored the study with the National Institutes of Health.
A variety of factors may be affecting these trends in foreign S&E graduate student enrollment, including improvements in the quality and attractiveness of S&E education in other countries as well as application and approval rates for U.S. student visas.
Total enrollment of S&E graduate students on temporary visas in U.S. universities also increased in 2006. While the growth in total enrollment was a more modest 2 percent, it represented a reversal of declines seen in 2004 and 2005. Enrollment of U.S. citizens and permanent residents also grew by 2 percent.
Despite the recent increases, both first-time, full-time and total enrollments in 2006 for foreign S&E graduate students are still somewhat below the peaks seen earlier in the decade.........

Impacts of Toll road privatization
Privatizing toll roads in the U.S. may result in significant diversions of truck traffic from privatized toll roads to "free" roads, and may result in more crashes and increased costs linked to use of other roads, as per a new study.
Peter Swan of Penn State Harrisburg and Michael Belzer of Wayne State University will present the findings of their study, "Empirical Evidence of Toll Road Traffic Diversion and Implications for Highway Infrastructure Privatization" on Jan. 14 at the 87th annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, D.C.
The study used data from the State of Ohio, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Ohio Turnpike to predict annual Turnpike truck vehicle miles traveled, and therefore diverted vehicle miles, based on National truck traffic and Turnpike rates. The scientists then compare estimated truck traffic diverted from the Turnpike to truck traffic on Ohio road segments on possible substitute routes.
Both economic models support the hypothesis that rate increases divert traffic from toll roads to "free" roads.
"While recently privatized roads do not have enough history to determine how high actual rates will rise, adequate data do exist to determine what happens when toll rates increase dramatically on state-run toll roads," says co-author Peter Swan, Assistant Professor of Logistics and Operations Management at Penn State's Harrisburg campus.........

East meets West for 2008 Pirelli Calendar
We spent half the morning on Pirelli’s website checking out images from their 2008 calendar and we still cant get enough. We love the fact that they took a demure approach this year, in contrast to past calendars which have been more overtly sexual. The calendar was shot in Shanghai by Patrick Demarchelier who did a brilliant job. The use of colour is absolutely amazing!
Aside from being the 35th edition, according to Pirelli this calendar is a big deal as its the “first ever realized in Asia”. Titled “Pearls of the Orient” it features models and actresses, Maggie Cheung, Agyness Deyn, Lily Donaldson, Du Juan, Doutzen Kroes, Catherine McNeil, Mo Wandan, Sasha Pivovarova, Coco Rocha, Caroline Trentini and Gemma Ward.

Voter I.D. Requirements Reduce Political Participation
A new Brown University study reports that U.S. states that require voters to present identification before casting ballots have lower levels of political participation. The research also indicates that voter I.D. policies discourage legal immigrants from becoming citizens, especially for blacks and Hispanics, reducing odds of naturalization by more than 15 percent. The full study, released by the American Communities Project at Brown's Initiative in Spatial Structures in the Social Sciences (S4), is available online.
Since 2000, and stimulated by new security concerns after 9/11, there has been an upsurge in state requirements for voter identification. By 2004, a total of 19 states mandatory some form of documentation of a voter's identity, sometimes in the form of photo I.D. Proponents of such requirements believe identification is a necessary tool to prevent voting fraud, such as voting by noncitizens or people who are otherwise ineligible to register. Others argue that whatever its intention, I.D. policies have the effect of suppressing electoral participation, especially among minorities.
The report, co-authored by S4 Director John Logan and graduate student Jennifer Darrah, concludes that voter I.D. is one of a number of factors that negatively influence civic participation in the United States. The report states, "At a time when a number of public officials express regret that immigrants seem to lag in their participation in mainstream society, even small suppressive effects on naturalization - the formal step to becoming an American citizen - work in the wrong direction and should be taken into account as people evaluate the benefits and costs of more stringent identification requirements".........

MultiGame Tabletop Arcade Machine
If I had $3000 to drop on an arcade game, I might get the MultiGame Tabletop Arcade Machine. 48 classic games in standard cocktail game cabinet, complete with a coin slot if you want to charge your friends to play, or you can just use the freeplay setting.
My wife would like this machine because it has Galaga! Me, I'd probably play Gyruss, Mr. Do!, or Dig Dug. If you don't like those games, there are 44 others for you to choose from.

Blogging for Business
Are you blogging yet?
I have already mentioned blogging in a few entries and now here is an article from the New York Times that discusses blogging for your business.
Blogging is an excellent way to keep your customers up to date on what is happening in your business and to make you a little more personal. Do you think the manager of Wal-Mart has a blog about his store? Maybe one or two may but for the most part is just not part of their job.
One thing the article says that I disagree with is that if you're a restaurant or clothing manufacturer blogging may not be a priority. While I agree that it may not be high on your priority list it should be.
So what can a restaurant blog about?
You can blog about your specials. You will have to plan them a maybe a week in advance but it can pay off. Say you blog on Monday about your specials from Friday and Saturday. One of your regular customers who was not planning to come in next week but sees his favorite dish will be a special, comes in anyway. It did not take you that long to blog and it just sold you some meals.
Other ideas for a restaurant blog would be to put on recipes and have your chef personalize what he does. Now you don't want to give away any important recipes from your restaurant but there why not share some easy to make recipes that your customers can try at home. While some may worry that the customer will stay home instead of coming the restaurant, remember going out is something special and if the customer likes the recipes you give, you will be in their memories.
Just think of the possibilities.
