Myth, reality and gun crime

Myth, reality and gun crime
The assumption that gangs are at the root of gun crime in the UK is overstated, as per a research studypublished recently in a special issue of Criminology and Criminal Justice, published by SAGE.

In their paper, 'That's Life Innit': A British perspective on Guns, Crime and Social Order, Professor Simon Hallsworth and Dr Daniel Silverstone suggest that while gangs certainly exist, they are not involved in most illegal shootings: the reality is far more complex.

Working on separate research projects, both scientists independently concluded that the importance of gangs was vastly exaggerated. The article summarises combined third party data exploring issues such as firearms availability and the culture of weapons use in the UK.

In one of the largest studies examined, the Home Office conducted 80 structured interviews with young people involved with weapons. To find their subjects, the scientists travelled to several UK cities with high levels of gun crime, and visited penal establishments and youth offending teams, as well as the streets themselves. One of the most striking findings from this study was the sheer level of violence that gun users had experienced. Of the 80 interviewees, 40 had previously been threatened with guns, 29 shot at and eight had been shot. Additionally, 28 had been stabbed, 17 injured with other weapons, 34 had been robbed and three had been kidnapped. 26 reported friends or family members shot and injured and another 26 reported friends or family shot dead.........

Trash or treasure? Families and their beloved possessions

Trash or treasure? Families and their beloved possessions
Whether it's grandpa's piano or a Nintendo Wii, certain objects become a part of family routines and histories. A newly released study in the Journal of Consumer Research helps explain why some possessions wind up in permanent storage or get tossed away, while others are kept for generations.

Amber M. Epp (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Linda L. Price (University of Arizona, Tucson) conducted a two-year case study that tracked the origins, movements, and placement of one family's objects. "It is not necessarily the history of an object that rescues it from being discarded, but also its place in a network of other objects, practices, and spaces that determine whether and when it's replaceable," the authors write.

"Our study suggests that families should consider the downstream consequences when introducing new products or services into their homes," the authors write. "It's important for families to be conscious about which activities or objects are important to preserve, particularly during times of change".

As an example, the authors point out the ways family patterns shift when a new object enters the home. The authors use a Nintendo Wii as an example: "It may create new uses for spaces and solutions for how to prevent sound from spilling out into other rooms. It could shift interaction patterns among family members, creating new gaming practices among some and abandoning other practices such as watching TV together in the evenings," the authors write.........

Breaking (good!) news

Breaking (good!) news

In what can only be called a serendipitous turn of events, it has come to my attention that June 1st, besides being Doughnut Day, is also the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s World Milk Day.

While Canada’s love of milk seems to be sadly under represented on the roster of events planned for June 1st , you can commemorate and celebrate the goodness of a cold, tall glass of bone-strengthening milk at the same time as you celebrate Doughnut Day.

All I can say is: don’t just do it; do it and tell two friends!

Atlanta, GA: OK Cafe

Atlanta, GA: OK Cafe
Although I have lived in Atlanta since the late 90"s, it was only a couple of weeks ago that I stepped into the OK Cafe for the first time.  Terrible, I know!  Everyone in Atlanta knows about/has eaten at the OK Cafe, but I just never had the urge to go.

Then, my guy-friend/male-friend/not-yet-boyfriend chose OK Cafe as one of our weekly dinner outings.  He was really very cute about it, trying to pick a place he though I would be able to find something on the menu, since I am "counting" points.  I didn"t have the heart to tell him southern comfort food is not ideal for dieters.  For those no-holes barred eating folks? The menu is good for the hungry calorie seeking tummy. For us?  I ended up with a veggie burger, while he ordered the pot roast.

Opportunity costs

Opportunity costs
When we choose to spend $10 more than usual for a bottle of wine, we'll have $10 less to spend on an appetizer, a dessert, or ten songs on iTunes. That's known as the "opportunity cost" of that choice. A newly released study in the Journal of Consumer Research looks at the benefit of drawing consumers' attention to opportunity costs.

Unless opportunity costs are explicitly named, most consumers don't consider them when making purchases, as per authors Shane Frederick, Nathan Novemsky (both Yale University), Jing Wang (Singapore Management University), Ravi Dhar (Yale University), and Stephen Nowlis (Arizona State University). They observed that consumers made different choices when opportunity costs were made clear.

For example, in one study, the authors observed that the percentage of people interested in paying $15 for a DVD fell by 20 percent if the "not buy" option was explicitly described as "keeping the money for other purchases." In another experiment, they demonstrated that the choice share of a 16 Gb iPod Touch roughly doubled when the cost difference in comparison to the 32 Gb model was phrased as "leaving you $100 in cash." They found the effectiveness of such manipulations depended on participants' chronic attitude toward spending. "Tightwads are less affected than spendthrifts, as they appears to be more inclined to spontaneously construe purchase decisions in terms of opportunity costs," they explain.........

Too much information?

Too much information?
Choosing among products can be more difficult if you tend to think more about the process of using an item rather than the outcome of the purchase, as per a newly released study in the Journal of Consumer Research

"Marketers often try to tempt consumers to buy their products by encouraging them to imagine themselves using the product," write authors Debora Viana Thompson (Georgetown University), Rebecca W. Hamilton (University of Maryland, College Park), and Petia K. Petrova (Dartmouth College). But this "process-oriented" thinking can lead to confusion.

"In this research, we show that when consumers are choosing among products, focusing on the process of using a product (versus on the outcomes) can increase decision difficulty and hinder consumers' motivation to subsequently implement their choices," the authors explain.

Consumer decisions often involve trade-offs between means and end benefits, such as weighing quality versus price, rewards versus risks, or enjoyment versus effort. Process-oriented thinkers tend to focus on both ends and means, making decisions more difficult.

For example, in one experiment, participants were asked to choose between a small apartment that mandatory a short commute and one that was larger but mandatory a longer commute. The scientists instructed participants to either think about how living in the apartment would affect their daily routine and habits (process-oriented thinking) or to think about what they would gain from living in the apartment (outcome-oriented thinking). "Process-oriented participants thought about both the size of the apartment and the length of the commute, were less likely to choose the larger apartment, and experienced more difficulty making the choice," the authors write.........
